Deep sea anglerfish can be found in the ocean from depths of 300 to 4,000 m. below sea level. They have a lure that has a light at the end to attract prey. Only the females have this lure, they wiggle it from an apendage on their forehead. |
| The temperature gets to 39F. The pressure can be from
3000 to 9000 pounds per square inch! Anglerfish also get nourishment
from the deep vents in coral reefs, from which scraps of food from other
meals fall.
Most anglerfish have jelly-like skin and soft, thin bones. They are usually gray or black in color. Like most deep sea creatures, they have small eyes. They can grow to a yard long, and some are the size of a fist. The male deep sea anglerfish is much smaller than the female and acts as a parasite. |

The female deep sea anglerfish are predators that feed on large organisms. They have powerful jaws and a very stretchy stomach so they can swallow prey larger than themselves. One kind of anglerfish was found to have eaten a hatchetfish twice its own size. |
